ICP-MS -spektrometrit

ICP-MS on epäorgaanisen analytiikan tekniikka, jolla yleensä mitataan kvantitatiivisesti eri alkuaineiden (kuten metallien ja välimetallien) pitoisuuksia. Menetelmä perustuu näytteen hajottamiseen ja ionisoimiseen plasmalla (Induction Coupled Plasma – ICP), ja mittaukseen massaspektrometrisesti.

ICP-MS -mittaus onnistuu luotettavilla laitteilla

ICP-MS:llä käsitellään useimmiten nestenäytteitä, jossa analyytit ovat liuenneena yleensä happopitoiseen vesiliuokseen. Eli kiinteät näytteet pitää ensin käsitellä (esim. liuottaa tai märkäpolttaa) nestetilaiseksi. Muita vaihtoehtoja ovat orgaaniset liuokset sekä esimerkiksi laserilla kaasutus (laser ablation). 

ICP-MS -detektio jakautuu teknisesti sekä kvadrupoli-laitteisiin, erilaisiin häiriönpoistotekniikoihin (multi-kvadrupolit, reaktiokennot), että erilaisiin high-resolution tekniikoihin. Yleisimmin käytössä on yksöiskvadrupolilaitteistot, ns. törmäyskenno häiriönpoistolla, jota käytetään yleisesti ympäristö- ja elintarvikeanalytiikassa, sekä erilaisissa teollisissa sovelluksissa. Multi-kvadrupolit sekä muut vastaavat laitteet ovat pääasiassa puolijohdeteollisuuden laadunvalvontalaitteina, joskin niillä on myös erikoissovelluksia muilla aloilla.

ICP-MS -analytiikassa pystytään tyypillisesti noin ppt (ng/L) tai jopa ppq (pg/L) pitoisuuksien mittaamiseen. Iso haaste ICP-MS -analytiikassa on ympäristön puhtaus, ja osa sovelluksista vaatii puhdastilatyöskentelyä.
